Bulletin 10-2008

Looking for Unemployment Cover? You don’t need to buy PPI!

Issue of the month

There seems to be a worrying misunderstanding among consumers and in the industry that the only way to get Unemployment Cover (which is very popular at the moment) is to buy a PPI policy. That's not true of course. You can buy Unemployment Cover on its own, or you can buy it as an addition to a policy such as Income Protection or Real Life Cover, both of which offer far better protection for consumers than PPI. They are often cheaper too, as well as being much easier to claim on because they have far less of the small print and none of the exclusions PPI is infamous for.

Round up

10 – The number of life insurance rate changes since the last bulletin (LV=, L&G, Friends Provident (x5), Scottish Provident, Fortis, AEGON)
17 - The number of positive protection stories we spotted in the consumer press since the last bulletin.
28 – The percentage of people who think price comparison sites are genuinely independent, according to research by GFK Financial.

Case study of the month

Client: Susan Elsdon

Needs: the client was struggling to find a policy because of serious health issues. She was initially offered a limited level of protection with another company but it was very expensive because the chosen insurer was greatly loading her premium.

Result: because of our access to underwriters and knowledge of insurers, we managed to secure her the Life Cover policy she wanted, and with only a 50% loading.

(If you need a protection case study, feel free to get in touch and we’ll find one for you).

Hero of the month

BUPA Individual Protection
…for agreeing to financially support Tom Baigrie’s call for an industry-backed hard-hitting protection advertising campaign. The campaign will be for the benefit of the whole industry, as well as consumers. Several other Life Offices have also been very supportive and the wheels are very much in motion.
